ARCHMedium SFFDH Competition Entry

Fire is a destructive force. Our building represents its damaging nature through fractures and deformations. From two pivotal points the plan, exterior panels and roof planes have been fractured. These symbolic panels and planes, formed of a metal mesh, texture the Headquarters building with rays of light. At night, the Station radiates light to become a beacon to the surrounding context. The transparency of these materials appealed to us, as we felt that the public should have an expressive display of San Francisco’s Fire Department. In our view, the space surrounding the building should be for relaxation, enjoyment and contemplation. We propose a series of pavilions which retain and build upon the Headquarters iconic style, whilst creating beneficial spaces for both leisure and remembrance.
